Illustration & Book cover
Project description
Book illustration, one of my absolute favorite areas! I was all the more pleased when the publisher Wind Child Publishing approached me and needed both cover illustrations and book illustrations for the interior parts of a series of short stories. After initial discussions, manuscripts and exchange of ideas, the cover illustration for the book “The Blue Bird of Quigunaja” was to begin.
As the name suggests, this book is about the young woman Quigunaja, who repeatedly meets the blue bird during her journey. A journey full of dangers, surprises and twists. And a journey into your own soul. I don’t want to reveal more at this point so as not to prejudge the contents of the book 😉 The cover illustration should of course be based on the story and include the magic of the narrative. So I decided to focus on both Quigunaja and the blue bird, framed in a beautiful scene from the book.
The illustration is largely dominated by blue and green tones and gives a harmonious overall impression. From the sketch to the finished image, the illustration was created completely digitally in Photoshop, along with my trusty Wacom graphics tablet and good music. I basically create the sketch a little more roughly, then start with flat areas of color and work these out further using various brushes and color transitions. Structures and details are then added to make the result appear more realistic. Of course, always in consultation with the publisher.
When the illustration was finished, it was of course put into the cover format in InDesign, given the title, author, ISBN and description text and prepared for printing.
The publisher was thrilled and the book is now available in stores 🙂
